Call for Papers for 12th International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics

The 12th International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics (AHFE 2021) will be held July 25-29, 2021 at the Sheraton New York Times Square, New York.

The conference objective is to provide an international forum for the dissemination and exchange of scientific information on theoretical, generic, and applied areas of human factors and ergonomics. This will be accomplished through the following six modes of communication: keynote presentation, parallel sessions, demonstration and poster sessions, tutorials, exhibitions, and meetings of special interest groups. The five-day conference will start with tutorials. Tutorials will be offered at introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels covering the entire spectrum of the conference.

It is anticipated that a broad range of research and applied topics will be covered during the conference. All submitted abstracts will be peer-reviewed by three independent referees from the international program boards. Papers in the theoretical category should deal with models, concepts, and structures; papers in the generic category should present research results of broad applicability; and papers in the applied category should show how the demands of particular application areas shape the way generic research is translated into practical innovation.

Many Upcoming Conferences have Changed their Dates

Covid-19 has caused many conferences to cancel, postpone, or revise their format. I've updated the 2020-2021 Upcoming Accessibility and UI/UX Conferences post at https://events.stcwdc.org/2020-2021-upcoming-accessibility-and-ui-ux-conferences/ and the 2020-2021 Upcoming TechComm Conferences at https://events.stcwdc.org/2020-2021-upcoming-techcomm-conferences/ to show the revised dates and locations.

Check the rest of the scheduled conferences through this year and 2021. Some have been postponed for a year and some have moved to the Fall / Winter of this year. For example, Funka is usually held in Sweden in April. It was postponed to the end of November and you now have your chance to see Sweden in Winter.

If you've already made reservations for the conference, check with the conference website to see what their plans are for reimbursing you or applying payments to the 2021 or 2022 conference. They will also have information for cancelling hotel and travel reservations.

Check back again in a few months in case some of the ones who postponed to the Fall / Winter have changed to virtual or moved to 2021 or 2022.

It goes without saying that these are testing times for everyone as society collectively deals with the Covid-19 global pandemic. Workers, retailers, restauranteurs, teachers, students, and customer support operators are finding themselves obliged to move to online as the primary means of collaboration with colleagues and customers. It also goes without saying that a considerable number of these systems featured no or poor accessibility development/testing.

Given this rapid transition of many who are new to such online tools, the amount of additional accessibility blockers is growing by the day. Do developers and administrators of new websites and other digital content have accessibility in mind? Most likely not. Do the tools they use to quickly implement new websites, Apps, and electronic documents automatically generate accessible code? Commonly no.

As a profession, we have had to cope with our own business issues in the same ways as those in other industries. We've also had to step up to support those in other industries to help solve their accessibility problems, many of which have only emerged as a result of the massive switch to online operations. A lot has happened in a short time, and there is much that can be gained by sharing our positive (and perhaps, negative?) experiences in ICT Accessibility Testing research and practice. To play our part, we have to be here to provide support to those tackling their technology issues, so that we may help them ensure equitable access for all members of our society.

Our annual symposium has traditionally been a place for inperson knowledge sharing and for professional face-to-face networking. Let's use this year's online symposium to continue sharing what works during the current situation and beyond, and let's continue networking with our peers—but this time online—the same way that so many of us are getting used to while we go through this together.
