Who’s afraid of the Mailman list?

To all who were previously members of our weekly announcement list, please accept our apology for the recent technical difficulties the chapter experienced when converting our discussion lists from the Lyris to Mailman list management service. We understand that many of you received an unusually high number of e-mails that clogged your inbox. The problem seemed to originate with Mailman’s interpretation of three autoreplies that should have never been able to broadcast to this announcement-only list.

Once we noted the problem on Monday evening, chapter volunteers worked quickly to shut down the Mailman list. We have already changed the configuration of the list to block autoreplies. We are now working with the list administrators to make sure we understand the root of the problem so that we can run smoothly from here on out. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and hope that you will continue to subscribe to our e-mail announcement list.

Note that while our message with a "Welcome to the Stcwdc-annc mailing list" subject line specified that you should have received an e-mail with your password by that point, we have learned that no such message went out. As many subscribers learned when they unsubscribed, you can manage your subscription by following the link provided in the welcome message without using a password. You can then specify a password for yourself if you want one.

We are always looking for better ways to communicate and the migration to Mailman was just one option we considered. We still believe that it is the best available option for our subscribers and are comforted that Mailman lists are quickly becoming the standard for STC and other popular local discussion groups far larger than ours.

We hope to resolve the technical difficulties soon and will keep you informed about the details. Until we feel completely comfortable with Mailman, the chapter will continue using this Lyris discussion list to inform you about chapter events and activities. If you have unsubscribed from our Mailman list and would like to rejoin the list, which we will eventually use for chapter announcements in place of the Lyris list, please visit the list home page.

You are welcome to contact Kristen Sweet or Carolyn Kelley Klinger with any questions.

Thank you for your patience and we hope you have not lost faith in our ability to disseminate information to you. We value your interest in our organization.
